Thought the third deployment would be easier...

Then I found out about this...

Yep. Three days after I got on a plane to leave the country for a year, we discovered that Emily was indeed pregnant.  She even sent me the pee-stick to prove it.  I have it displayed in my room like a proud dad would put up the most recent crayon drawing.  We waited until Thanksgiving day for the big reveal to be sure things were going smoothly, so if you're just finding out, you're not far behind.  Emily's 1st sonogram was not long ago and so far everything looks normal; it has two of the things that it's supposed to have two of, and one of each thing that it's supposed to have one of.  Hopefully not a sign of things to come, it was uncooperative during the exam and would not position itself to allow us an early guess at the gender.  We'll know that before Christmas probably.

Here's what we do know.  At the time this post was published, Emily had just reached thirteen weeks.  Don't get me started on the whole pregnancy calculating thing.  Apparently not everyone tracks the pertinent information as well as Emily does and so the natal community prefers to just throw in a couple extra weeks for good measure.  But anyway, thirteen weeks.  For those doing the math in their head right now, I left the country about nine weeks ago, so relax.  Anyway, the official due date is June 1st, 2012.  I've already submitted my request to take my two weeks of leave at the beginning of June.  Please pray for a problem-free pregnancy, and that my request can be filled based on what's available.  I have to miss the next six months of growth; I can't imagine how disappointed I would be to miss the birthday, but we know that's a real possibility, especially with the unexplained inability to accurately predict how long that thing needs to cook.

So how are we feeling?  Well... We were both surprised and I will admit this was not in our five year plan.  (It wasn't really in Emily's 30 year plan :-).  But we also have to admit that we're not steering this ship, and through decisions we obviously made, and God's providence, here we find ourselves.  Friends who know us well will understand that we're both still adjusting to the news, but there's no getting around the excitement to see what the two of us have created with God's blessing.  Emily was able to spend the busiest shopping day of the year with her mom checking out cribs and baby things, and through nervous laughter she will tell you that she's looking forward to meeting this thing as much as I am.

So, that's about all the news that's fit to print.  Please pray for us.  It's gonna be a long year.  But coming home will be so sweet.

Feel free to comment below.  I read them all.

- Jeff

  5. A few things:

    1) I cannot imagine a more blessed child than the one who has Emily and Jeff Gelzinis for parents. So excited for you! And us!

    2) My kids are going to FLIP! Can't wait to tell them.

    3) There are these amazing things called birth control pills. I'm betting Emily has heard of them. Heck, I bet she knows how to make them! ;-)

    4) I need lots of details about logistics, like: where delivery will be, where will Emily be after "this thing" gets here, what does mean for her schooling, graduation, etc.

    5) You do know you can't kennel up a baby like you do your dogs, don't you?

    6) We want to do ANYTHING, absolutely ANYTHING, y'all need us to.

    7) We are praying like CRAZY!

    8) Everything is going to be fine.

    9) You and Emily are our heroes. We love you. Can't wait to meet baby Gelzinis!

    Still in shock,
    Stacy

  8. I completely understanding that your blog will be different in lieu of recent events. Kelly and I are very excited for you guys and know that this is God's Gift to two very great people. You guys are going to be great parents and it will be the hardest thing you will ever love. Have you guys broken the news to the dogs? They will not know how to act once they become second string to Little Gelzinis. Looking forward to hearing all the developments and to take words from Troy, we would feel priveledged to part of the big family "Down Here" that gets to be a part of your lives in raising Little Gelzinis.

Keep the news ,events and especially developments flowing and be safe.

  14. Jeffrey, where to begin..."This thing" is a baby and you will soon find out 2 things, that you think you already know, but honestly have no clue. First, you will find out what LOVE is. Because until you have looked into the eyes of that little miracle, you will NOT have ever truly known unconditional love. It is like your first love only a millions times more overwhelming and sweeter and the feeling lasts a lifetime. Second, you think you know God now. Well I have news for you.....wait till you actually witness the miracle of life. Not a dog or a cat but a real living, breathing person. You will never doubt there is a God nor what God's capabilities are. You may BELIEVE now, but trust me, you have no idea. And God's majesty will be reaffirmed every day you look at your miracle forever and ever. I know that you have heard your parents tell you that they love you, but until you see your own child, only then will you understand the depth of your parents love for you. Finally, no matter how much you and Emily prepare...every day for the rest of your life will be filled with the unexpected, surprises, joy, sorrow, worry, fear...the list is endless. Be thankful that God chose you both to bring this beautiful life into this crazy world. Protect this baby with your life, love this baby with every part of your being and know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that as much as you give, this child will give back to you so much more! I love you Jeffrey and am THRILLED to become a Great-Aunt again. I only wish you guys lived closer so that I can share on a daily basis the excitement of every new day. God bless you and keep you safe.

  15. Jeff,

First, congratulations to you and Emily and Glory to God who superintends all events. I’m sure there are a lot of conflicting emotions: joy, surprise, concern, apprehension…all coming out at once.

I know you are concerned (and probably upset) that you aren’t there during Emily’s pregnancy, and may not be there for the baby’s birth if the timing doesn’t work out right. I’d like to let you know, you are repeating a pattern….I left on a Navy deployment in 1981, leaving a “slightly” pregnant wife behind. She gave birth to a baby girl three months before I came back to the States. So on our return from deployment I was greeted at the pier by my wife and a three month old baby girl. That three month old baby girl is your wife. So things are going to work out fine.

Rest assured that anything Emily needs she will get … we’ll see to that. I have a feeling Sue is going to make Spring Lake NC a third home.

    Love and congratulations. Stay safe.

    Dad (Greg)

  17. Ahh! I'm so so so so SO excited for you guys!! This is great news; you guys will be amazing parents! As always, let me know if/how I can help in any other way than providing many prayers. I can't wait to meet Baby Gelz!!!

Random aside: I'm pretty sure when your kid reaches the appropriate age, your child will ALWAYS be in the front of conferences/concerts/sporting events/general admission events because they will learn firsthand the bubble formation and master it at an early age.

  18. Thanks everyone. We appreciate the encouragement. So far, Best Comment goes to Stacy Fountain.

More details will follow, but to answer a few questions... If nothing crazy happens with the pregnancy, Emily will be able to finish school and graduate on time. I will be home from Afganistan in September. We'll most likely be moving to Alabama at the end of 2012, beginning of 2013. Emily will stay in NC until then. I doubt she'll be working before we move, but we do need to get all Dave Ramsey on those loans eventually.

Aaron, Triplets? I would love it, but not likley unless that sonogram doc had no idea what he was doing.

Stacy, "Playpen" is just a fancy word for "Crate".
